Winter warmth – which flooring to keep bedrooms cosy?

As winter approaches, many homeowners wonder how to bring more warmth into their bedrooms to help them stay cosy and sleep more soundly.

There are various factors that influence how cold rooms are and, therefore, how you can warm them up. Climate is a key factor, of course, but there are other issues to consider, such as where draughts are coming from, insulation (uninsulated floors can cause up to 20% of home heat loss), and window coverings, as some keep the cold out better than others.
One of the most important factors, though, is flooring because some materials are better at retaining heat than others.

Carpet

Not only does carpet feel fantastic underfoot, it’s also a superior thermal insulator (ie. it’s good at stopping heat from moving from one place to another) thanks to the fibres it’s made up of being good natural insulators, and the ability of the fibres to trap air between them.

To get the best warming results, bedrooms should be carpeted from wall to wall.

For an extra layer of snug, consider adding a quality underlay with a high thermal rating – like our Premium or Elite foam underlays – beneath your carpet, as the thicker carpet is, the greater the thermal insulation.

As carpet – in particular, wool carpet – is naturally good at keeping a room warmer (and cooler), it helps reduce your need to pay for gas or electricity to change the temperature in your bedroom.

But remember, ill-fitted, cheap carpet won’t perform as well, so it pays to invest in a quality, professionally laid product.

Vinyl Flooring

Vinyl flooring – which comes in virtually unlimited styles – warms quickly underfoot (but also remains cool in summer), and can accommodate an insulation layer, so it’s a solid winter selection for the bedroom.

Hybrid Flooring

With a stylish hardwood-look, hybrid flooring blends the best of laminate and vinyl floors.

Timber Flooring

When it comes to absorbing and retaining heat, timber flooring is an excellent choice and engineered hardwoods are well-suited to fluctuating temperatures, so these selections can also create a suitably cosy sleep space.

With flooring, there’s a lot to consider and, because each home is as unique as the needs of those living in it, the Parrys team is always on hand to help guide your decision. See you in store soon or give us a call today.
