Cleaning

Just as you clean your clothes when they are soiled, you also need to properly maintain your carpet. Certain styles and colours require more frequent maintenance. E.g. a light coloured carpet must be cleaned more frequently than a dark coloured carpet. Heavy traffic areas have to be cleaned and maintained more frequently than other areas in the house. The key is to not allow the carpets to get too dirty before you clean them. Attack soil spots and stains immediately.

Watch those high wear areas

No carpet lasts forever, but you can add years to your carpet’s life by making the most of its amazing in-built ability to resist most common food and beverage stains. A carpet wears out because of foot traffic and dirt particles that get trampled deep into the pile. When these particles aren’t vacuumed away they have an abrasive effect on the fibres that dull the carpets appearance. Carpet areas near doorways and entryways (particularly those leading in from outdoors) catch the most traffic and wear. It’s a good idea to give extra maintenance attention to these high wear areas.

Easy to remove stains and spots

No matter how careful you and your family may be, soiling and spills are bound to happen. If you treat your spots and stains right away, they’ll be easier to remove. Some stains can be permanent if allowed to stand even a few hours. Ordinary household materials and a bit of elbow grease will usually get the job done. For more difficult stains consult with a professional cleaner.

What to do first

Remove as much of the solid stain-causing material as you can with a spoon or spatula and blot up liquids with paper towels. Do not rub or scrape the stain as abrasiveness could cause permanent damage.

Use the stain removal procedure appropriate for the type of stain it is. Apply all solutions sparingly and work in gently from the edge to the centre of the stain so it does not spread. After the stained area is treated you must remove excess moisture by blotting the area with paper towels or a clean sponge. Complete your stain removal procedure with a thorough vacuuming of the carpet.

Tips

Vacuum frequently. Use a vacuum cleaner with beater bars and good suction. Change bags and filters regularly.
