Parrys Carpets:

Carpet for your living room

Creating an idyllic living room – where you can contentedly catch up with family and friends – begins from the ground up.

Otherwise known as a lounge room, this is also a key place where we put our feet up and take a break, so comfort is king! And, when comfort is a must, so is carpet.

Here are some key things to think about when it comes to carpeting this very important space in your family home.

Make sure it’s durable

As living rooms are a central gathering place in the home, they can be busy, with lots of people moving in and out as we relax and entertain. That means the carpet in these spaces needs to be robust enough to be able to withstand this heavy use and high foot traffic.

These multipurpose areas are a platform for many different activities and this needs to be factored in when selecting an ideal floor covering. The specific type of things you and your loved ones like to do in your living room will dictate how durable your carpet needs to be.

If the flooring you’ve got your eye on is known for being fast wearing but you need it to last, it’s better to steer away from it. A great indicator of durability is the length of the residential warranty your carpet comes with.

Carpet can get technical when it comes to longevity. There’s a lot to think about such as:

  • if the carpet is cut or loop pile or a combination of the two
  • if it’s woven or tufted
  • its twist
  • pile height and density, &
  • how it’s constructed.

Carpet can also be impacted by high humidity and extreme temperatures, so do consider that, too.

Material & feel is everything

Do your kids play on the floor in your living room? Are you a family who likes to stretch or do yoga in this space? Do you like to lounge on bean bags, as well as couches, in the living room?

All of these questions and more help point you in the right direction when it comes to the material you select and how you want it to feel and stack up over time. For example, if you do spend a lot of time sitting on the floor, it pays to invest in a softer type of carpet material that won’t wear quickly.

For those who value quality, wool and wool blend carpets are an excellent choice. They are highly durable, comfortably soft and look incredible. Oftentimes, whether a carpet’s material is man-made or natural is important to homeowners, so it’s wise to have a think about that before you head out shopping.

There are many choices nowadays but, at Parrys, you’ll find something perfectly stylish and robust amongst our large range of nylon, wool and polypropylene carpets in an array of colours, textures and patterns.

Make your colour call

Making a call on the best carpet colour for your living room is one of the most difficult choices for most people – and it’s a very personal one.

As the colour of your floor sets the mood for the space, considering what ambiance you want the room to have is essential when selecting the hue of your carpet. Do you want a lively, upbeat room geared towards fun or a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of the outer world? Will it be a formal or a casual space?

For those who don’t necessarily have a bold living room vision, neutral carpet colours tend to win. Having a neutral base gives you the ability to add colour with rugs, pillows, lamps, statement pieces, wallpaper or paint, and artwork. The best bit is these can be easily changed as interior design trends shift. A neutral carpet choice is also less likely to date your home and lighter neutrals can brighten a darker room.

If you want to add warmth, choose a deeper brown, gold, terracotta, cream or red carpet. Dark grey is sophisticated and black makes a powerful impact, as do other bold colours, patterns and textures.

In 2024, nature inspired blues and greens are making a splash. We could go on! The choices are endless.

Another thing to look at before you decide, is what other flooring this carpet will join up to in your home, to ensure it doesn’t clash.

Maintenance needs

How much time you have to maintain your carpet is important when choosing your specific floor covering.

Being multipurpose and often used by a number of bodies at once (including fur babies!), living room carpet can be prone to stains and spills, which need to be cleaned up fast.

Then, there’s the need for regular vacuuming to keep your carpet looking fabulous, so ensuring you get the best quality carpet you can afford is always smart.

Some carpets can fade, too. This means having a good sense of how much sunlight enters the room, and how you may be able to manage that with window dressings and treatments, is also helpful information to have when carpet shopping.

There are many stain and fade resistant carpets around so, if that’s what you need, ask your Parrys Flooring Solution Specialist for guidance.

The take-home

Choosing a carpet that fits your style, is functional and durable, and lifts up your home while meeting your budget is easier when you’ve done some thinking before you step into the showroom.

If you’ve done all of that and still aren’t quite sure which way to go, we understand!
