Why Warm Tones Are Taking Over Homes This Autumn
Warmer, earthy tones are shaping up as a key home trend in Autumn 2026, with these calming hues helping create warm, inviting spaces.
With a Mediterranean climate, Perth can cop a lot of sunlight and heat, but that doesn’t mean it’s best to steer clear of warmer coloured flooring choices.
In fact, whether you want engineered timber, vinyl or hybrid floors, placing warm tones underfoot can have many benefits.
The psychology of warm vs cool tones
Most of us know colours can have a psychological effect, and it applies to flooring, too.
Cool toned floors such as pale timbers, greys and whites are known to make rooms feel more spacious, airier and visually cooler.
On the other hand, warmer tones like caramel, honey and richer amber hues deliver flooring with subtle visual appeal and a more personal, cosier feel.
Warm vs cool toned floors
Many Perth homes are open plan, allowing more of the city’s abundant natural light to flow inside. While this has its upsides, it can also make spaces appear more airy, cold and sterile.
Warm toned floors address this issue, and also effectively reduce the impact of artificial lighting in homes, thanks to their grounding, comforting and welcoming effect.
Open plan homes also mean more heat can make its way inside, especially during the warmer months. Some homeowners have historically chosen grey tones for their floors to manage this, but while cooler tones can create the perception of a fresher space, they don’t actually lower the room’s temperature. So, there’s no practical reason to rule out warmer hues.
Identifying warm tones
When looking for warm toned flooring, it’s worth looking a little closer at the flooring you’re considering.
The key is in the undertones, the subtle shades that sit just beneath the surface colour. These are what really determine whether a floor reads as warm, cool or neutral.
When searching for warm floors, which give depth without overwhelming your space, seek out colours including:
- Honey: golden and light-yellow undertones.
- Caramel: butterscotch and rich yellow orange undertones.
- Amber: deep red brown and orange undertones.
