What to Look for When Buying Vinyl Flooring?

Vinyl is one of the many flooring materials available and if you are considering it for your new home or renovation, this article is for you. The material is made from Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC), a form of plastic. It has many advantages including that it is very affordable, durable, water-resistant and is easy to clean. It is available in a huge variety of styles, textures and thicknesses. If you’re thinking of giving your floor a new look, vinyl might be the right option for you.

Traditional, luxury or hybrid vinyl?

There are three main types of vinyl, namely: traditional vinylluxury vinyl and hybrid vinyl.

The common traits they all share such as being durable, waterproof, easy to clean etc. will vary from type to type. Each kind has a different constitution and structure and the production process for each varies so the characteristics they share will differ to some degree.

Traditional vinyl has a softer texture with cushioned backing and is soft underfoot while still remaining hard wearing and durable. It comes in sheet form for easy installation in most rooms and is also the most affordable option.

Luxury vinyl comes in different thicknesses and is in plank form. It has the ability to replicate the appearance of natural stone or timber, giving a more realistic look.

Hybrid vinyl is built for impact resistance and durability combining the best aspects of vinyl and laminate. It differs from traditional and luxury vinyls in that it’s built with a rigid limestone core. This makes it very strong and extremely long lasting while still having the realistic look of the luxury planks

Vinyl sheets or planks?

Sheet vinyl, as the names suggests, comes in a wide roll that can installed in large areas with minimal joins. While that is an advantage in some cases, it means that timber or stone look prints won’t appear as realistic as planks. Nevertheless, they provide a very attractive look for people who are not driven to simulate a natural wood/stone floor cover.

Vinyl planks, on the other hand, require significantly more time to install as they must be placed piece by piece. However, they provide a very realistic appearance for those wanting the look of natural timber or stone.

So, how does vinyl stack up when compared to other flooring alternatives such as laminate, linoleum, cork, etc? As well as being soft and hard wearing, easy to clean and affordable vinyl is easy to install – great for DIYers and it comes in a virtually unlimited variety of styles, colours and patterns.

Parry’s parting words

You will need to have your end goal in sight while considering which product best compliments your vision for the room, the durability you require and your budget.

We advise that you choose vinyl that has the right composition and traits to match your space and personal preferences. Make sure you do your due diligence on the different vinyl types mentioned above. Take your time. With so many vinyl variants available in the market, you are guaranteed to find exactly what you need.
