What “100% Waterproof” Really Means
When you live in a busy household with kids, pets or a pool, waterproof floors are essential.
Not all floors offer the same level of protection, though.
If you’re looking for 100% waterproof flooring, here’s what you need to know.
Waterproof vs water-resistant
Waterproof floors are impenetrable to water, meaning their surface is fully protected, though in the case of a major water event like flooding, it’s always worth considering the subfloor as a separate protection.
Water-resistant floor coverings are far more resilient to spills than carpet, but they can still be damaged as water can seep into cracks and seams.
What rooms must have waterproof floors?
Rooms that have to regularly cope with a lot of water should be prioritised when it comes to investing in waterproof floors.
Generally, that includes bathrooms, laundries, toilets, kitchens and areas prone to moisture, like basements.
That said, not every waterproof floor suits every wet room. For laundries and toilets, glued down vinyl plank is the right choice as it is the only product that prevents water getting underneath the floor.
Why Perth Homes Need Waterproof Floors
Many homeowners dismiss the need for waterproof flooring, believing that our summers are hot and dry. In reality, Perth’s Mediterranean climate, which combines wet winters and humid summers, can create ideal conditions for mould. In some suburbs, clay-heavy soils contribute to damp and drainage issues.
Due to hot days, many Perth homes have pools, increasing the chances of excess water hitting floors. Beach trips often create the same issue, especially for oceanside houses.
With all that to contend with, investing in 100% waterproof floors provides best long-term value.
Waterproof flooring performance: hybrid vs vinyl
Vinyl flooring comes in two forms, and choosing the right one depends on where it’s going:
- Glued down vinyl plank is 100% waterproof and the only suitable option for laundries and toilets, as water cannot get underneath.
- Loose laid vinyl sheet is waterproof at the surface but can allow water underneath in very wet conditions, so works best in lower moisture areas.
Across both types, vinyl offers:
- It’s waterproof, with a core layer that’s typically made of 100% synthetic polymer materials that can withstand moisture and prevent it penetrating the surface.
- Vinyl’s backing layer also features padding that is highly mould and mildew resistant.
- Luxury vinyl sheets or planks which mimic the natural warmth, look and feel of hardwood suit every room, delivering a seamless look.
- It’s generally more affordable than hybrid flooring, though hybrid’s extended warranties and performance specs reflect that investment.
Hybrid is a great choice for living areas, bedrooms, hallways and kitchens, but is not suitable for laundries or toilets. Because the boards are rigid, they can’t flex toward the floor drain, and as it’s a floating floor, water can work its way underneath over time and cause mould.
For the right spaces, it delivers:
- Thanks to a limestone composite core board Hybrid flooring is highly resilient to everyday spills and splashes.
- They’re odour-resistant (i.e., perfect for homes with pets).
- Hybrid floors are incredibly long-lasting (some offer a 25-year warranty).
- Provide a beautiful hardwood floor look, with lower maintenance.
- The core board resists direct heat and extreme cold, so there’s no buckling, lifting or splitting with temperature changes.
