How To Fix Damaged Carpet Disasters

Carpeting is such a cozy and luxurious floor covering for any home, so it can be devastating to find that your new (or less-than-new) carpet has become damaged!

At Parry’s we want everyone to love their choice of flooring, now and in the future, so we have put together our top tips to help recover your beloved carpet and undo the damage.

Disaster #1: You Have Pulls In Your Carpet

Pulls can be caused by many different things, from wearing stilettos on the carpet, heavy furniture being dragged, or even pet’s claws becoming caught (naughty Fido!)

But there is no need for tears. Pulls are a simple problem to fix if you know how and all you need is fabric glue and a pen

Step 1: Trim the pull/snag if needed.
Step 2: Gently push the pulled thread/s to one side so you can see the gap in the carpet where it came from.
Step 3: Dab a small amount of the fabric glue into the gap.
Step 4: Using the tip of the pen, gently push the snag back into the hole.
Step 5:Leave to dry (following fabric glue instructions).

Too easy! Now all you need to do is lay down some ground rules, like no stilettos inside, and make sure pets’ nails are trimmed regularly to prevent it from happening again.

Disaster #2: Your Carpet Is Soaked

No matter if it was from a roof leak, a plumbing issue, or some other disaster, wet carpet is something you need to act on as quickly as possible. Wet carpet, if left alone, can become a hotbed of mould and nasty smells.

All you need is fans or a wet vac to fix the problem, in just 3 simple steps!

Step 1: Firstly, you need to work out the cause of moisture. If the water is coming from flooding or sewage, the carpet is typically not safe to keep, and you may need to bring in a plumber before you can proceed. Alternatively, if the water is clean and has come from a broken pipe, for example, it’s often okay to reuse carpet.

Step 2: This one is pretty obvious – stop the water from causing more damage! As mentioned, you may need to call in the big guns for this one, like a plumber or if the damage is from a leak, then a roof repairer.

Step 3: Once the water has been stopped from causing further damage, you can use fans or a wet-vac to dry your carpet. This needs to be done within 48 hours to prevent mould spores from growing within your carpet.

Disaster #3: Your Carpet Has Stains

Carpet stains can be very frustrating, as the majority are caused by simple accidents that cannot always be prevented. We have put together some of the most common stains and how to remove them:

• Wine or juice: A good trick for wine or juice spills is to start by spritzing with club soda or soda water, then blot with a clean microfiber cloth. Repeat until the stain is gone.
• Chocolate: Use a dull knife to scrape away as much chocolate as possible. If the chocolate is melted, place a resealable plastic bag filled with ice cubes or an ice pack over the stain to harden the remaining chocolate before scraping, then vacuum the area to pick up any loose flakes or pieces. Mix 1/4 teaspoon of liquid dish soap with one cup of warm water, and use a clean cloth to apply the solution to the stain, working from the outside toward the centre. Leave the solution on for at least five minutes, then blot with a paper towel or a clean microfibre cloth until the stain is gone.
• Dirt: Allow dirt or mud to completely dry and then scrape off as much residue as possible, then vacuum. Apply a detergent solution (as above) and let the solution sit on the stain for 10 minutes before blotting with a clean white cloth or paper towel.
